Community-Driven Governance Model
Open Questions
The structure described in this white paper are a novelty, an experimentation stirring given facts in the extremely conservative field of science and scientists. The creation of a scientific journal run by a digital cooperative is a considerable challenge. A community with a tokenized economy is another challenge. Our goal is to tackle these questions together as a community, and through multiple working groups which will include science area experts. We expect those experts to substantially improve the system’s long-term potential.
Governance and effective collective decision-making on scientific publications: can a decentralized community effectively govern and attract the expertise required to successfully run a publishing house? Will the token-based voting mechanism described herein succeed in generating positive outcomes?
Scientific publications industry logic absorbed by Academia: will the scientific community be open to publish on a journal produced by a decentralized collective, as opposed to current business practices? Will departments, directors, governmental and funding agencies realize the false value of the impact factor created by the publishing houses to create and adopt a true factor based on the scientist’s merit instead of a being part of an industry that sells prestige? Will deScier be able to support a sufficient number of publications to become positive-sum at scale?
The dilemma of ownership: Will scientists be able to see value in owning their scientific articles? Will a secondary market be created? Can deScier successfully create value for scientists? Or other mechanisms will allow the industry continues its game? Can we develop our own voice in the decentralized science movement?
